Inkwell Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 16, 2026

Inkwell turns photos and scanned pages into PDF documents. The documents people convert with it are often the most sensitive things they own: medical letters, tax records, contracts, passports. This policy describes exactly what Inkwell does with them, which is nothing beyond what you ask it to do on your own device.

The short version

Photos and files you choose

When you pick images from your photo library or browse for files, iOS hands Inkwell only the specific items you selected. Inkwell reads them to build your PDF and does not scan, index or catalogue the rest of your library. It requests no permission to your full photo library beyond the standard system picker.

Camera and the document scanner

The document scanner uses Apple's VisionKit to capture pages with edge detection and perspective correction. Camera access is requested only when you open the scanner, and the frames it captures are used solely to produce the page you are scanning. No image is stored or sent anywhere outside the document you are building.

Text recognition (OCR)

Making a PDF searchable uses Apple's Vision framework, which performs text recognition on device. The recognised text is embedded into your PDF as an invisible layer so that Spotlight and the Files app can search it. No text leaves the device, and no text is sent to us or to any third party.

Password protection

Password locking uses 128-bit AES encryption provided by Apple's CoreGraphics PDF support. The password you choose is applied directly to the PDF on your device. We never receive your password and we cannot recover it. If you forget the password on a document you encrypted, that document cannot be opened by us or by anyone else.

Where your documents live

Images you add and PDFs you build are written to Inkwell's own temporary directory inside the app's sandbox, which is cleared when you finish or leave. Nothing is copied into a permanent library of ours, because we do not keep one. A document only becomes permanent when you export it yourself: to Files, AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or a printer over AirPrint. Once you send a document somewhere, it is governed by whatever app or service you sent it to, not by Inkwell.

Purchases

Inkwell is a paid app and offers optional in-app purchases that unlock the document scanner, searchable OCR and password locking. All payment processing is handled by Apple through the App Store. We never see or store your payment card details. Inkwell asks StoreKit which features you own; that exchange happens between your device and Apple.

Children

Inkwell is rated 4+ and is safe for all ages. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children, because it collects no personal information at all.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted on this page with a new date above. Because Inkwell collects nothing, any change is likely to be a clarification rather than a change in practice.
